Heading Out!

I leave today for the Black Hills of South Dakota to watch Courtney at the State Track Meet!
Unfortunately, Chad and Jeremy will not be going along....just too much to do here on the farm this time of the year. I will have some company on my long drive though, I am taking Courtney's best friend Tayler and also her cousin Jarrett along. They were both on the track team and want to go cheer their teammates on that made it to the State Meet.

Dentist

I took Jeremy and Courtney to the dentist yesterday. Neither one of them has ever had a cavity.....until yesterday. Courtney has a small one that needs to be filled....bummer! She goes back in on June 1 and is a little nervous about having it filled but I told her she would breeze right through it.....hopefully I am right!

Spring Work

Whew....the heart of spring work, the planting....is complete! We still have a few spots that were wet when they planted but are now dry and they are filling those in but the majority of the crops are planted...YEAH! The garden is planted (not looking so good but it is planted), and we just got done re-planting the grass around the yard....Chad accidentally killed most of the lawn last year spraying what he thought was a chemical for lawns but must have had something else in it. The lawn that did survive, finally got it's first mowing. Most of the cows are moved to pasture, just have a few loads left but are waiting probably a week or so to haul them. Spraying is caught up for now....will have more the end of the week to do. So....now we can hopefully get caught up around here on the things that have been neglected the last several weeks (and months).

Track

The region track meet was held today and Courtney qualified for the State Meet in shot put....YEAH! So....I will be making a trip to Rapid City next weekend for the State Meet to watch her throw. Yeah again...a mini vacation. This is what we call her chipmunk look....she does it every time she throws the shot put. Hey, if it works....go with it!

Cows and Calves

Been busy the last few days moving cows and calves to pasture. It was so hot and windy yesterday....I was exhausted by the time we got in last night. We have had some sick calves so we have been treating them all with a shot and with 2 pills down their throat...makes for a lot of extra work but will hopefully be worth the effort.

School

Courtney has one more week of school and then will be out for the summer! Where did the time go?? It seems like just yesterday I was sending her off to Kindergarten and now in a few months I will be sending her off for her final year of high school.

It's been just crazy busy here on the frazzled farm! Chad has sprayed many of the acres that have been planted and is finishing up planting the corn as I type this. He has a few acres to plant for a neighbor but will hopefully get that planted tomorrow. I couldn't even tell you how many bags of corn I have lifted this year....usually Chad and I both do it but has had to have someone chase him around and fill the planter for him because of the shoulder. I am so happy that Jeremy is now here full-time to help out, he finished his his first year of college last week.

We are going to get started planting the soybeans today....hopefully the weather holds out. Not quite as many acres of soybeans to plant as corn acres but still plenty.

We haven't had time to get around the pastures yet and fix fences that need it but really need to find time to get that done....the cows really need to get moved to pasture. We are going through tons of hay right now.

I did make it to Courtney's track meet this week. She did very well at discus and her relays but is struggling in shot put, her usual strong event. Hopefully she can figure out what the problem is and do better at the next meet. As much as I hate to see her struggle at anything, I think it's a good life lesson.

Well, I can hear the pigs calling my name........

Hopefully I can find time to catch up with you all....sorry, I have been really bad at this blogging in the last few months.

Spring Work

We are busy with spring planting. In between rain showers, we have been workin' away at it. Chad is able to plant which makes him a happy man but he still needs help filling the planter, still can't lift much weight with the shoulder yet. We have over half of our corn acres planted...now if the weather would hold out so we could get the rest of the corn in and move on to the soybeans!

I still don't have my garden planted...hoping to get that done this week. I bought the plants this weekend and the seeds awhile ago but the garden is in a low spot so I need to get it dried out and tilled before I can plant.

This week I suppose we will have to get at fencing. All the pastures need to be gone around and any bad spots fixed so we can get the cows and calved moved to pasture. That's always a long and tiring job, pairing them all up and getting them hauled.

Courtney and Jeremy

Courtney had one track meet this week and did pretty well. She placed 2nd in shot put and one of her relays also placed. Tomorrow is the Dan Barker Relays in Madison and then the Conference meet next week.
She has less than 2 weeks of school left since she won't have to take semester tests....I can't believe how fast this school year went.

My college boy just finished his first year of college...way to go Jeremy!
Now he is home for the summer to help on the farm...whew, some help....just what we need!

Critter

This little critter was in our window well the other night!
I am pretty sure it's a muskrat.
So my brave girls helped us take care of the ugly critter.
Courtney and her friends Tayler and Hannah.

And then they all wanted to take turns shooting the pistol.....
First Courtney.....

Then Tayler.....

And then Hannah!
It's never dull around here and you never know what you might find us doing!
